Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

This is: Japan 2018

Background

Bruce and I made our first joint visit to Japan in 2014, with an itinerary involving the west coast of Honshu and the northern island of Hokkaido. Prior to that, we had each individually made at least one short visit to the country: I had spent a few days in Tokyo (1991 and 2004) and Kyoto (2006) - in each case as part of a round-the-world trip - while Bruce had made one 'flying visit' to Tokyo. In thinking about another Japanese trip for 2018, two conclusions quickly emerged:

we were both overdue another visit to the capital, and
having 'done' Hokkaido, it would be fun to experience the opposite end of the main Japanese archipelago: the
    island of Kyushu.

From that point, it didn't take long to put together a relatively brisk and interest-packed itinerary featuring Tokyo, Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Fukuoka, with a change of location taking place every other day. The outbound intercontinental journey was a joint venture in BA First Class, while separate homeward flights brought my first experience of Finnair's long-haul offering in Business Class.

Turning now to the process of documenting the trip, this report trials a different technique for displaying the majority of the accompanying photos, whereby many sets of pictures are presented as a slideshow superimposed on the underlying web page. I thought I might be able to use some sort of plug-in to achieve the desired effect, but in the event ended up learning enough JavaScript basics to code it myself. Debugging the result took a considerable effort, but it certainly beat watching daytime TV!

I hope you enjoy both the content and the updated look.
