Round The World and other travels

A frequent flyer's collection of trip diaries

This is: Singapore & Malaysia 2014

Background

This was the last of four back-to-back 'big trips' in the period September-December 2014. Bruce had come by a wodge of time-limited Cathay Pacific miles and decided that, rather than let them go to waste, he would use them as the basis of a long weekend in Singapore. Although I probably wouldn't have been up for that, it didn't take me long to start thinking about whether I could maybe join my friend in one of my favourite cities, while also spending a little more time in the region. The usual research - however did we manage before the Internet? - led me to the conclusion that an award booking on Qatar Airways would work well for the outbound, while for the return journey, the same bargain fare on Sri Lankan Airlines that Bruce was using would suit me too. Then, once I had hit on the idea of making my first visit to the semi-autonomous Malaysian province of Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo, my fate was sealed.
